Under the patronage of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Yangon Photo Festival (YPF) has become one of the main international yearly events in Myanmar. YPF and its affiliated training programs were founded in 2008 by the Institut Français de Birmanie. Nine years later, as the country starts a new chapter in its history, YPF has trained more than five hundred photographers, who document this transition through powerful photo-stories about important social, cultural and environmental issues. At the dawn of what all hope to be a new era for Myanmar, the 9th YPF gives the best Myanmar photographers free rein to show the challenges confronting their country through 15 exhibitions and tens of screenings organized at IFB, Goethe Institut, Pansuria Gallery, River Gallery and Myanmar Deitta.

In addition to the work of local photographers from all around the country, the festival hosted two exceptional collections celebrating Myanmar’s extraordinary ethnic diversity: the “Frontiers Photographs (1918-1935)” of James Henry Green and “In Search of Dignity”, the superb series of portraits taken by famous German photographer Günter Pfannmüller in the 80’s and 90’s.

This year the YPF once again showcased the Word Press Photo Exhibition. As freedom of information, freedom of inquiry and freedom of speech are more important than ever, quality visual journalism is essential for the accurate and independent reporting that makes these freedoms possible.

After a week of screenings and exhibition, the Yangon Photo Festival culminated on 11th March with its Yangon Photo Night where the best Myanmar photo-stories are screened to a large public audience in front of a jury of personalities. Among other prizes such as DSLR cameras, two photographers will win a chance to study photography in Europe
